What is it?
World Without Oil (WWO) was an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) which was played in 2007. It tried to leverage a massive amount of people to plan for and engineer solutions to a possible near-future global oil shortage. In a sense this was a MOOC avant la lettre. It was designed as a serious game in which a realistic future with an oil shortage was sketched. All the participants used standard online tools (video, microblogs, etc.) to describe their life in this near future and how they adapted to the lack of oil based energy. The game was than adjusted on the basis of the input from the players.
Why is it DIY?
This game was fully open with people from all over the world participating. The game also adapted on the basis of the players meaning that avenues of interest were built on.
